Breast augmentations are minimally invasive procedures involving incisions that are only three centimeters in length. It can be performed in one of two fashions. Breast implants are either put in above or below the muscle for safety reasons. There are varieties of incision sites where your surgeon can make incisions. The incision can be placed in the axillar or areolar. There can also be incision through the umbilicus where the breast implant is placed under the soft tissues and then into the breast. For this type of Mammoplasty procedure, breast implants could be with saline that is normal saline or salt water implant which requires a small incision for the implant to be put in safely. It can also be with silicone gel but this is mostly used for primary breast augmentation and it requires a large incision for carrying out the implant but also it is effective. Breast reduction is often performed on those who think their breasts are big and they feel the need to go for surgery in other to reduce them. Understanding this procedure can help in your decision and also help in your surgery. Just like every other type of surgeries, there are also reasons or indications that make you want to have a breast reduction surgery such as cystic breast infection, back pain, loss of sensation in the breast, arms and fingers, sleeping problems and poor posture resulting from large breast to mention but a few. Of course, with this surgery too comes incision. Incisions are made along the natural creases in the breast and areola. A keyhole shaped incision above the areola is also made for the new location of the nipples. During this procedure, excess skin, fat and breast tissue is removed. After the incision, the skin is is removed from the lower portion of the breast and then the areola, nipple and underlying breast are moved to a higher position. After surgery, there can be change in breast sensation as well as the inability to breastfeed.
Then there is the breast reconstruction which is often an option for mostly women who have undergone mastectomy (surgical removal of a breast to remove a malignant tumor) due to breast cancer. The procedure allows the reconstruction of breast with desired appearance. This can be done with implants or with the woman’s own tissue. Sometimes, a segment or part of the woman’s abdominal wall can be used; back muscles, skin or fat from the buttocks too can be used.
